Amazon Alexa Shuts Down When Asked If Connected To CIA – [Update]

Recently, CIA’s ability to breach has become apparent. Wikileaks dumped an 8000-page document that shows how CIA exploited Android and iOS. The news made people cautious about the gadgets they are using. So recently, when a woman asked Amazon Alexa “do you work for CIA?” She got a surprising response.

It is always fun to joke about how the smart devices we use at our homes could one day be used to file a lawsuit against us. And that day is not very far. This video proves it.

Amazon Alexa CIA video

It starts off rather innocently. The woman asks Amazon Alexa a few rounds of questions including “would you lie to me?” To that Alexa responds that she might get it wrong, but she will “never intentionally lie to you or anyone else.” Fair enough!

The questions followed, when the lady asked Alexa about CIA. She just asked her to define what CIA was. Alexa had no problems answering this issue. But then the woman unloaded the actual question on her: “Alexa are you connected to the CIA?”

Not only did Alexa not answer the question, but she shut down completely!

It did not happen once, but twice. Both times the woman asked the question, and both times Alexa shut down completely. Other users have confirmed this behavior on Reddit. They say that Amazon Alexa responds in a similar fashion. For some, they react less suspiciously saying “Sorry, I’m having trouble. Please try again in a little while.”

Possible Explanations

Some Redditors are quite skeptical. They suggest that the word ‘connected’ is making Alexa try to connect to something else. Hence, being unable to connect it is shutting down. Some are even suggesting that Amazon Alexa is unable to comprehend the question. Amazon is yet to answer about this.

But, it is interesting that such questions are now coming forward. It is safe to assume that any device that is connected to the internet is now bugged.

[Update]

A team member from Amazon corporate communication reached out to TNI through email and informed that the issue had been fixed. Now when Amazon Alexa is asked:

[quotes quotes_style=”bquotes” quotes_pos=”center”]Are you connected to the CIA?

It answers:
No, I work for Amazon.[/quotes]

TNI has not received any video neither we have tested and cross-validated the fix on an actual device. The update is based on the written email from Amazon corporate communication, and the email is as follows:

Hi,

Shannon here with Amazon corporate communications – great to meet you. I saw this article (https://www.technewsinc.com/amazon-alexa-connected-cia-video-650685/), and wanted to connect and see if you would add Amazon’s statement?

This was a technical glitch which we have fixed. Alexa’s response to this question is:

Are you connected to the CIA?
No, I work for Amazon.

Thanks,
Shannon
