Apple is famous in revealing a lot of advanced gadgets. And this time too, the company has come up with something new. The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will bring the 10-nanometer chip technology. It will come early next year. What will be so special about this technology? The 10-nanometer technology will offer better performance. It will also consume lower chip areas.
At present, Apple uses 16-nanometer chip areas for Apple iPad. The 10-nanometer chip is much better than the 16-nanometer version. The TMSC has made it clear that it is going to make quite good revenue from this 10-nanometer technology. The product will launch in the first quarter of 2017.
The reports of DigiTimes state that Apple is the first customer of TSMC. Apple will start mass production of Apple iPad with 10.5-inch display in December. The new Apple iPad will have Apple’s next-gen A10X tablet specific application processor. At present Apple is using A9X processor chip for the iPad Pro models. There are chances the new range of iPads will have TSMC manufactured 10-nanometer tech. And this reports come from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
TSMC A10X processor in Apple iPad
If Apple is starting mass production of next-gen iPads, it needs A10X processor now. Assuming it takes three months to build the chip, the A10X processors will get ready by December. And it can support the production of next-gen iPad. TSMC CEO, C. Wei says, “We transferred one 10-nanometer chip to production in the third quarter of this year.”. The first 10-nanometer device offered reasonable revenue. The chip they were talking about is the A10X.
TSMC and Samsung competition
Both the TSMC and Samsung are in competition. With the TSMC we have the A10X processor. And with Samsung, we have Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. The Snapdragon 835 processor from Samsung might be ready by March-April time of 2017. The A10X chip will also be available in early 2017 for iPad launch. MediaTek will also not sit back. It will launch its 10-nanometer application processor called Helio X30. It will ship in the first half of 2017.
The A10X and Helio 360 will ship in small volume. But they will enhance the manufacture of TSMC 10-nanometer production. This technology needs to be precise. Right now we cannot predict how the next-gen Apple devices will perform. If the next-gen Apple devices perform well, the 10-nanometer will get a firm hold on the market.
