Coolpad Cool 1 Dual – Complete Review

With the start of 2017, we saw the launch of many smartphones like the Moto G4 plus, the OnePlus 3T, and also the recently launched Lenovo K6. In such a situation, one more new smartphone called the Coolpad Cool 1 Dual was launched on the joint venture of LeEco and Coolpad.

We also saw Nokia making huge announcements that it is going to bring the Nokia Android smartphones to the market. Apart from that we already have a plethora of latest smartphones with high-end specifications existing in the market. Today let’s review Coolpad Cool 1 Dual.

Coolpad Cool 1 Dual build and design

The design is not something new, but the quality is good. You will have a solid metal chassis and matte finish. The placement of buttons and quality is good too. It is a bit heavy and comes with 5.5 inch IPS display with full HD resolution. The display does not come with a thin bezel.

It is thick and is present all around the screen. The panel will offer you a good viewing angle and an excellent color reproduction. The brightness levels are quite adequate. You are getting a corning gorilla glass 3 for its protection.

The phone has backlit capacitive buttons at the bottom, notification LED light on top and there is a nano stray on the left. There is an infrared emitter on top, a 3.5-inch audio socket. The phone also comes with a USB type C port along with speaker grille. A fingerprint sensor will help you for authentication. The phone also comes with dual rear cameras.

Specifications and features

The Coolpad Cool 1 Dual is powered by a Snapdragon Octa-core 652 SoC processor. The speed and performance are fast. It also comes with two additional ARM Cortex A72 cores. The online unit comes with a 4GB RAM while the offline unit comes with a 3GB RAM. The storage spec is 32GB. It is very much common with other devices.

One of the flaws with storage is you cannot increase the storage with a memory card. So 32GB might not be enough storage. The phone supports 4G LTE on both SIM slot and other features like Bluetooth 4.1, USB OTG, FM radio and the GPS. The unit that TNI reviewed could not make the voice calls with JIO network though the data was working fully.

The user interface

The Coolpad Cool 1 Dual does not have Cool UI that we have seen in the LeEco phones in the past. The OS is same, though, but it comes with the Supertainment Streaming services of LeEco. The Coolpad is within the limit of LeEco, so it has a single custom version of Android instead of multiple different ones. The EUI might take some time to get accustomed if you have not used the LeEco phones previously. The layout of this UI is a bit different than the stock Android. The interface does not have a bloatware, though.

Coolpad Cool 1 dual performance

Smooth app performance and multitasking with a fast octa-core processor. High-end games do not lag at all. No issue of overheating, but when you are charging or running too much intensive apps or games, the device can get heat up a bit. Media playback is excellent; the SoC can handle 4K resolution videos and the high bitrate files. There is also a single speaker that offers decent volume for media and alerts. The stock music player is good, and there is also a graphic equalizer.

Camera and video recording

The Coolpad Cool 1 Dual comes with a 13MP camera on the back side. One comes with a color sensor while the other one comes with a monochrome data. Thus, the cameras offer good quality pictures. The low light images are not high quality, though, but colors will improve if you switch to night mode. In daylight, the camera struggles with light metering. The colors are better captured at day, but the pictures lack sharpness.

The video recording for Coolpad Cool 1 dual can record 4K resolution HD videos, and the front 8MP camera is pretty good for taking selfies. In the artificial or low light, the selfies are not great. The focus speed is good, and the images are saved quickly. We have SLR and many other modes for shooting that includes filters too.

Price and battery life

The battery life is excellent for the Coolpad Cool 1 Dual. It has got 4000 mAh battery that lasts for 14 hours and 43 minutes on a video loop test of TNI. On an average usage, you can expect a full day of battery. The phone charges up pretty quickly because of the 10W adapter. The price of this phone is Rs 13999 from the retails and for the online stores, you can expect a reduction of 500 INR.

Final verdict

The phone is quite a good one considering the price and specs. The battery backup is also good. Though it is not yet ready to compete with other latest smartphones like OnePLus 3T or the Moto G4 plus because of the lesser internal storage space.

Also, the phone does not have the option of increasing the memory with external SD card, so this is a pretty disappointment in this price range. The camera quality is also average. So, all things considered, you can opt for this device, but you will have a lot of options to check out in this price range.
