Facebook Photo Matching Will Block ‘Revenge Porn’

Facebook is undoubtedly the biggest social media platform till now. But you cannot deny, this is the most vulnerable social media platform too. Anyone trying to defame you, all they need is something secret about your personal life and expose it on Facebook. It will present you to the world. In such a condition, the Facebook photo matching feature will stop any revenge porn. The feature makes easier for the people to report the images.

You can report for revenge porn and Facebook App or Facebook website will prohibit anyone from sharing the images. It is a good feature to prevent anyone from share explicit content/pictures from someone’s personal life. So, regarding safety, we can say, at least no one can blackmail you or expose any of your personal pictures on Facebook. In most cases, they will disable the account for sharing explicit images without permission. The other major social media platforms like Twitter and Snapchat should also think about implementing this feature.

A brief idea on the cause on Revenge porn

We are in the 21st century, where the most common way to humiliate any individual is to defame him/her in social media. “Revenge Porn” is one of the ways of humiliating a person in social media. It is a way of exposing explicit content or images on the internet, without the consent of the individual in the pictures.

It is targeted towards men and women both, from their exes or former partners. Sometimes aggression, ego, breakups, dealing with cheats, canceled wedding, or failure to accept rejection also leads to revenge porn as well. No, we are not justifying it AT ALL. We just mentioned the possible reasons of Revenge Porn.

Why didn’t Facebook act early?

It was not impossible for the social media giant to bring this Facebook photo matching feature to stop revenge porn. Well, one vague argument Facebook can present is, even 2-3 years before, no one thought to use Facebook to humiliate people. The company learned its lesson after many US individuals sued Facebook. According to Facebook, people had the option of reporting an image or content which was posted against his/her consent. But after your report, it takes pretty long time for Facebook to take action.

And even if the post is removed immediately, the person can still repost the same images or content. Who will stop him from posting it several times? Thus, the argument in 2015 (when Facebook was sued) was, what was Facebook doing to prevent it from posting any explicit image repeatedly. Finally, Facebook came up with the Facebook photo matching after facing a lot of criticism.

How does Facebook photo matching feature work?

Facebook will train a group of employees. They will work on the review of each image. They will create a database where they will retain the banned images. Such incidents have started taking place in such a huge rates, that these leads in people getting into depression, even suicides. Humiliation in social media even led to a complete ruin of careers for a lot of individuals. Facebook is also thinking of using AI for tracking and preventing explicit images, but not right now.

Israel has already brought up anti-revenge porn Laws. In the US also, the federal government formulated a law against revenge porn according to the legal provisions constituted by the state of California. The trained employees working on Facebook photo match will have access to the database of prohibited images. The images will be blurred before they can access the database.
