What would happen if your computer worked as fast as your brain? It sounds scary right now, but Elon Musk is already on his way to make it a reality. Elon Musk is scared that the world will be taken over by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Was he speaking about his own creation then? Welcome, Neuralink – a technology that can link itself to our neurons.
What is Neuralink?
The company is working with creating software that can link to our brains. These brain implants will help human beings merge with AI and software. It will no doubt help the AI to keep its pace up with humans. Just like in the TV series Westworld, the AI will practically become sentient. It can happen with the input directly from the human brain.
How many times have we wondered if we could store all the info in a microSD for our exams? This is why they say – be careful what you wish for – because, with this advancement, the memory will increase for sure. We can also directly interface with the computing devices.
Elon Musk’s Not-So-Subtle Hints
Although the company is not divulging much of anything right now, Musk has hinted at the existence of Neuralink several times in the past. “Over time I think we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence.” He added that “it’s mostly about the bandwidth, the speed of the connection between your brain and the digital version of yourself, particularly output.”
What abour neural lace? Announcement soon?

Future of Neuroscience and Neuralink
Such implants are only science fiction right now. But science fiction has its way of becoming a science reality. At present such brain implants in the skull are very invasive and very complicated. Several people with Parkinson’s and neurodegenerative diseases have tried it. But only a few thousands of people have completed the input of such devices. The reason is simple – our medical equipment is not as sophisticated. If Neuralink becomes a reality, how long do you think before the medical equipment is upgraded too?
In fact, Kernel, a startup created by Braintree co-founder Bryan Johnson, is seeking to upgrade human cognition. The company said that its team of researchers is working carefully to remove all neurodegenerative diseases. Eventually, these will make our brains work not just faster, but it will also be more interconnected.
But what are its impacts?
The worst part about this is that the neuroscientists still haven’t figured out how the neurons communicate with one another. If technology overrides neuroscience, then it could cause more damage to the wearer. Neuroscience researchers say that they do not have enough methods to decipher how the brain neurons communicate with one another.
Plus, they will need people to volunteer to have these chips placed in their heads. “People are only going to be amenable to the idea [of an implant] if they have a severe medical condition they might get help with,” Blake Richards, a neuroscientist and assistant professor at the University of Toronto, told The Verge in an interview earlier this year. “Most healthy individuals are uncomfortable with the idea of having a doctor crack open their skull.”
