WhatsApp Introduces Video Calling Feature for Android Smartphones

People use WhatsApp worldwide; it is the most popular messaging app. Even a small update creates a hype among people. There is a major update this time.

WhatsApp is rolling out feature for video calls in the Android app, but not everyone has the feature yet. The latest beta app brings the feature and is currently available to users who are a part of the official Android beta testing program of the company. The functionality works across several beta versions, starting from v2.16.316 onwards.

The new video calling feature can be used by clicking on the calls tab or option available. For making a video call, users will have to tap on the dialler icon. On pressing the dialer icon, users will get an opportunity to either make a voice call or video call. They can also tap on the profile, and a video calling option will be available.

You won’t need an app update as long as you’re using the recent beta versions. If the person on the other end doesn’t have video calling enabled, they’ll just get a voice call option on their screen. You’ll still be able to see the video calling UI. The call log shows that as a video call, but tapping the video button displays an error message.

Some people have tried it and here’s the response- “Call quality was fine, but I noticed a bit of lag even on a 50Mbps Wi-Fi network. WhatsApp asked for quality feedback on video calls, so hopefully it’ll take that into account before making the feature available on stable builds.”

This will only be possible when both the users have the Beta versions.

There is no information on the date of launch and when it will be available for use.

This feature will quickly roll out Google’s Duo app as it only supports video calls. The company has been improving its product in the past few months, adding features like adding stickers to your images and the ability draw. Also, support for placing calls and composing messages with Siri on iOS devices. It also remains to be seen how they will optimize video-calling on WhatsApp gave where network connectivity remains uneven. Also, will video-calling be supported on WhatsApp groups or not, is another big question.
