Calling landline from mobiles is definitely a very expensive affair. However, soon, WhatsApp, Viber, and Skype would allow users for making VoIP-based calls to landlines and that too without any charges.

Landline calls on WhatsApp?

As per the new report, it is mentioned that already the government has given a green signal for this proposal. Hence, the day might not be too far when you can make free landline calls with the help of your favorite applications. Interconnect agreements have been supposedly approved by the government between the telecom operators and app developers for bringing this to fruition.

Well, do you know how this will work? Now, customers would be able to make calls through the app to the landlines. However, there would not be any kind of extra charges on this. Practically, this will work on Wi-Fi networks since cellular-data only offering will make this quite unattractive for many.

Good news on the way!

Be it any case, this is surely going to be a major breakthrough for the mobile industry and would also encourage calling on landlines, which since long has declined with the advent of mobile phones.

Telcos and app developers have not made any announcements as to when customers can access this particular feature. However, since we know these kinds of services are going to be popular, it is expected to see that developers would soon make this announcement in few weeks.

Update –

WhatsApp has already introduced the calling feature. However, you cannot make offline calls. You still need to stay connected to the internet to make calls. The calls depend upon your carrier or your  Wi-Fi connectivity. Although you do not need to pay to call through this feature. The calls are not independent of the carrier’s data charges. If you are using Free Wi-Fi the calls are both seamless and free. Shortly after this WhatsApp rolled out data encryption.
